Ramses (alternative spellings: Rames, Rameses, or Ozymandias) was a great Egyptian pharaoh and military leader who was considered the embodiment of power. During his long reign (1279-1213 BCE), he conquered most of the known world and greatly expanded Egypt’s territory and wealth. He built the massive temple complexes at Abu Simbel and Karnak, as well as numerous other shrines and monuments. He also established a number of new towns and cities, including Pi-Ramses, the city he used for his campaigns in Syria, and Abydos, whose extensive hieroglyphic inscriptions are widely regarded as among the finest works of ancient Egyptian art.
His military genius helped to secure Egypt’s borders from pirates and other foreign invaders, including the Nubians in the south and the Hittites in the north. He subdued a number of rebellious princes in Palestine and southern Syria, and warred with the Hittites to recover the provinces in northern Anatolia that had passed from Egyptian to Hittite control during the era of religious reformer Akhenaton.
During the Battle of Kadesh, 1274 BCE, Ramses’s army made a tactical error in deploying its forces. He divided his forces into four divisions, one of which was wiped out by the heavily outnumbered Hittite troops. Nevertheless, the battle was a significant setback for the Hittites and a major victory for the Egyptians.
After the war, Ramses established friendly relations with the Hittites and forged trade agreements with them. He even married the eldest daughter of a powerful Hittite king, which further strengthened his ties with that country.
